Giving Birth to our First Born

On May 2nd 1982, we were blessed with a fine beautiful baby girl.

I know the details on what happened because I was with her from the onset of labor all the way until she was released and we brought our sweet little bundle of joy home.

It was 20 days before our 1st Anniversary, a fact that I am sure slapped so many of the gossip mongers silly with.

Teresa went in labor Friday night the 30th of April at 7:00PM in the middle of West Hills Drive after buying a fudge bar to ease her craving for ice cream.  As she unwrapped and licked it while holding my hand the first pain struck her and the ice cream slapped across my astonished face and stuck to my nose and lips for a few seconds.

I rushed her to my car we jumped in screaming the happy news to my parents where we were visiting at and then I raced away.   We made a 25 minute trip in 8 and half minutes.   Somewhere along the way a highway patrolman lost sight of me and gave up once he knew why I was driving wildly.

Sunday May 2nd shortly before 1:42PM Teresa Nicole Breazeale came sliding out into the world.

I was in the delivery room trying to help keep Teresa calm.

She was having none of it as the pains were getting stronger, they had her hand strapped to a metal hand hold and she snapped it off and dislocated my left ring and pinkie in the process.   The doctor had to grab the metal object before she hurt herself or someone while I used 2 tongue depressors and tape to fix my fingers.  I had just pressed them back into the joint when Nicky's little head crowned, and I saw her slowly moving out of the womb.   The doctor was busy trying to use ether on Teresa to mildly sedate her, as I told him to hurry the baby is coming out now.

He ignored me and I moved my left arm (it was closer) to allow my daughter to slide right up to my elbow and I held her smiling at her as I asked him if he would help me get a better hold on her.

I cut the cord and helped clean her up and then went and told the family about it.

Teresa was sleeping from the ether and it was an hour before she got to see her.  It actually took her another hour to clear head enough to know what happened and who she was holding.   She looked at me and smiled and as was her custom she always asked if it was real as she said, "This is our baby?  This is the baby I had."

"For sure and for certain my love, that's the one I helped deliver," I replied.

She kissed our new born baby like she was glass and gently held her crying, smiling and glowing as her head now cleared and she said, "She is my baby girl and she always will be, I love you little Teresa."

She was so proud of our daughter but she was weak from low blood counts and her mother's recipe for bringing on childbirth, Castor oil.  She hadn't eaten a lot in the last two days since the labor started and she was trembling as she stated, "I have a daughter don't I.   I can be the best friend and mom at the same time can't I baby girl?"

That is what she was, the most loving and kind mother I ever knew.

She suffered the blues like all mothers do but she dearly loved our children and she loved them so much she spoiled them.
